How it’s used online
The meme is used when a situation looks bad at first and then completely turns around. The
top panel is the moment one side has the upper hand, and the bottom one is where the other
turns out to be stronger than expected. It can be as small as slamming your hand in a door
and thinking you are hurt, then remembering you are wearing thick gloves. A version that gets
posted a lot is someone playing a +2 against you in Uno, only for you to have another +2
ready to stack on top. Sometimes the twist is simply that the person who looked like an easy
target was the one to worry about all along.
How it’s used by brands
Brands can use the meme for moments that look like a disaster at first, until the customer
remembers they are covered. The first panel gives you the problem, and the second is where
the situation turns around. A travel insurer could start with lost luggage and reveal in the
second panel that the trip is insured. A cybersecurity company could do the same with
someone clicking a suspicious link before the protection kicks in. It also works for warranties,
backups, fraud protection or any service where something goes wrong but the customer has a
way out. Offers and discounts work the same way, where the price looks painful at first and the
second panel reveals that there is actually 40% off, free shipping or another deal waiting.
Courses and education can use the same idea, where the first panel puts someone in a
situation they were not ready for and the second shows that what they learned comes in
useful, like someone suddenly speaking to you in Spanish and your 200-day language streak
finally paying off. And for lighter engagement posts, the turnaround can just be the joke itself,
like your bank account on the last day of the month followed by your bank account again on
payday.
